Iroko has heartwood that varies from a pale yellowish brown to dark chocolate brown with lighter markings
most conspicuous on flat-sawn surfaces. It is sapwood is yellowish white and is clearly demarcated. It is
texture is medium to coarse with an interlocked and sometimes irregular grain. It has a slightly greasy feel
and is odorless.
Overview
Heartwood is usually a yellow to golden or medium brown, with color tending to darken over time. Pale yellow
sapwood is clearly demarcated from the heartwood.
Main Uses
Boat Building, Domestic Flooring, Furniture, Cabinet work and Shop fittings.
Working Properties
Generally easy to work, with the exception of its interlocked grain, which may cause some tearout during
surfacing operations. Also, deposits of calcium carbonate are sometimes present, which can have a
significant dulling effect on cutters. Iroko glues and finishes well.
